Naked Bike Ride
It’s a great event. A bizarre event but still great – apparently there are a few cities in England that hold naked bike rides and Brighton is one of them.
With 100’s of naked folk on bikes it is certainly a unusual (and amusing) day. I was surprised at the variety of people attending – from exhibitionists to naturists everyone seemed to have their own reason to take their clothes off and jump on a bike (apart from me!).
As you would expect with 100’s of naked people riding around the city the members of the public were a little surprised. Some car drivers and pedestrians had no idea where to look whilst others wanted to pose for photos and get high 5’s as they rode past. Watching and recording their reactions became my focus for much of the day.
As the official photographer at the event I was aiming to show the nakedness without actually showing any of the nakedness - if you see what I mean - which was definitely challenging. My job was to document the event so the images could be used to promote it in the future and so that meant trying to avoid the ‘rude’ bits whilst still showing fun atmosphere and Brighton streets full of naked people on bikes. As you would expect it was quite hard avoiding willies and boobs but I managed to work out the best angles to hide everything with arms and legs in the right places
The ride started in a penned area in a park where the riders removed their clothes and felt relaxed amongst other naked riders before heading out to the crowds gathering outside. A lot of Asian tourists who happened to walk past found the whole event hilarious and were posing for photos with every naked person they could find!
For my Faces of Brighton exhibition I took a portrait of the organiser at the start of the event when everyone was in the zoned off naked starting area – somehow (and I have no idea how) I managed to avoid all willies and boobs despite the image having loads of people in it. Total luck!
